What you do on a day-to-day basis

Many of the candidates we interview ask us to describe a typical day at Novantas, and the truth is that there is no such event as a typical day. The consulting industry exists to help clients deal with the forces of constant change, and as a result, our days consist of the unfamiliar and unexpected.

In fact, much of the intellectual reward in this business is based on satisfying our boundless appetite for new and different challenges. In many ways, recent college graduates are ideally suited for this environment. Like the experience of taking new and increasingly demanding classes every term, each consulting engagement will build upon your skills and prior knowledge, and help you become more self-directed, efficient, and valuable to clients and the firm.

Rather than thinking about a day, we might describe the set of activities that would take place during an Associate's initial year. At a minimum, these activities include:

• Teamwork. In each engagement, you are part of a team charged with synthesizing findings, developing insights, and delivering a solution to a client organization. Teams are assembled to focus on specific client challenges, so your team changes frequently. Over the course of a year, you might be a part of three to six teams, so your working relationships will expand and evolve rapidly.
• Research, data gathering, analysis, insight formulation, communications. Typically, an Associate’s role within the team is to provide insight with research, data analysis, and hypothesis testing. You will develop the skills to both diagnose the core business problem and identify a solution, including deriving the underlying drivers and assembling a fact base to constructing a solution framework and communicating recommendations effectively.
• Tools mastery. We use advanced analytics extensively in our client work. We anticipate that staff will become proficient in the use of these tools, from spreadsheets and statistical analysis software, to management and communications tools like presentation software and research databases.
• Professional development. You will attend formal skill development programs beginning on your first day at Novantas. These programs focus on the development of craft skills, such as data gathering techniques and writing presentations, as well as technical skills like statistical analysis and industry knowledge.
